During our first session, we will identify the issues that brought you to counseling. We will discuss your history and how it might bear on these problems. Treatment options will be discussed, along with possible risks and benefits. Finally, we will develop a plan, which will include your counseling treatment goals and the therapeutic modalities we will use to achieve them. This plan will include an initial determination of the approximate number of sessions involved, your costs per session and any other details relevant to your particular circumstances. Your treatment plan will be updated as progress is made or lack of progress indicates. You are expected to assume responsibility for resolving identified issues.
In an atmosphere that eliminates shaming and blaming, the counseling experience presents a mirror in which you may see yourself and your life exactly as they are. You may find undiscovered strengths in yourself and learn new skills that will allow you to resolve old conflicts and heal old wounds. During counseling, you may experience some increase in negative emotions (for example: sadness, anxiety, anger, guilt, confusion). This is normal and demonstrates your increasing ability to identify emotions. As you abandon old defenses and begin to develop more effective ways of relating to others you may receive negative responses. Family members especially, are accustomed to relating to you in certain ways. If necessary, with your agreement, significant others or family members may be included in the treatment process. Sigma Center believes in the "disease model" of chemical dependency and relies on blended models of treatment in dealing with chemical dependency including but not limited to relapse prevention therapy, individual and groups sessions, and total abstinence from mood altering chemicals.
Treatment is individualized to meet your identified needs. You may be asked to read books; listen to tapes; watch certain movies; keep a journal; or participate in specific exercises. Of course, these activities will not be required of you, but they may enhance your progress. Additionally, they can reduce the number of necessary sessions and make the counseling process more cost-effective for you.
There can be no guarantees about the outcome of the service delivery process. Please be assured that we will make every effort to provide counseling services that are effective, brief and solution focused in order to provide the maximum benefit to you.
